Tranquil Escapes: A Weekend Retreat in West Wales

Day 1: An Early Start and a Journey to West Wales

The day began abruptly at 3:30 am with Ozzy, my faithful four-legged companion, nudging me awake for our morning walk. After attempting to coax him back to bed, to no avail, we surrendered to the early hour and rose from our slumber.

We embarked on a delightful 30-minute stroll around the quiet streets and winding lanes of our neighbourhood, relishing the crisp morning air as we greeted the day. Upon returning home, it was time for breakfast and to prepare for our weekend adventure.

Our plan was to depart at 1 pm for our weekend getaway to West Wales, a timely departure for once. The journey promised around 2 hours of scenic countryside, meandering through country lanes and rugged tracks.

Arriving at our destination, we were warmly welcomed by the owner’s son, who instantly made us feel at home. After a brief tour of the cabin, nestled in a tranquil woodland setting adorned with blooming flowers and teeming wildlife, we were left to settle in.

The cabin itself boasted a cosy layout with a small kitchen area, a comfortable sitting space, a snug bedroom, and a somewhat unexpected cultural surprise – a compost toilet, which turned out to be less daunting than initially anticipated.

Eager to stretch our legs, Ozzy led the way for a local exploration, marking his territory and delighting in a few playful chases with the resident rabbits. With our canine companion content, we ventured to Aberaeron, a quaint town perched on the west coast of Wales, just a 30-minute drive away.

Though Aberaeron didn’t offer a plethora of activities, we indulged in one of the finest bags of chips we’ve ever tasted from Fish & Chips Aberaeron Llond Plât, where people spoke strong Welsh and enjoyed each other’s company, savouring the simple pleasure of seaside fare.

Returning to the cabin, we settled in with a steaming cuppa, serenaded by the soothing sounds of birdsong as dusk descended, enveloping us in the tranquility of nature’s embrace and settled in for the night.

Day 2: An Early Start and Adventures

After a night of tossing and turning, Ozzy woke me at the lovely and on-time hour of 5 am for his morning walk. After wrapping up, we headed to a field provided by the owners for visitors with furry friends. After a couple of laps and a few ball throws, we returned to the cabin for breakfast and a much-needed coffee, enjoying the most beautiful sunrise. In that moment, a real feeling of peace came over me, and a sense of belonging.

After filling my belly and finishing my coffee, Ozzy and I set off to explore some trails. After spending a good few hours walking, we returned for some afternoon tea and a relaxing sit on the front porch of the cabin, listening to the birdsong and watching the rabbits and other wildlife.

For our evening meal, we lit a fire pit and cooked some steaks over the open flames, enjoying the serene ambiance of the quiet countryside. Our stay at Ty Mawr has been one of relaxation, laughter, and pure bliss. We are grateful to the owners for their warm welcome and hospitality. If you’re seeking a place to escape to, I highly recommend this haven of wonder and tranquility.

We depart with cherished memories and a renewed sense of adventure.
